Typical Language Development in Bilingual Children

This workshop addresses how children acquire two languages.  It covers the developmental process of phonological, vocabulary, grammatical, and pragmatic skills, to help speech pathologists, teachers,  and other professionals recognize normal developmental patterns of English language learners.

Workshop participants will be able to:

  •  Identify facts and myths about bilingualism
  • Discuss how to talk to parents about bilingual language development
  • Explain environmental and cultural influences on language development
  • Analyze children’s functional proficiency in each language
  • Explain how the two languages interact
  • Give examples of how L1 can influence L2
  • Describe rules of code-switching
  • Give examples of dialect features often misinterpreted as atypical
  • Discuss normative speech and language data of Spanish speakers and Spanish/English bilinguals
  • Identify developmental patterns of phonology, vocabulary, and grammar
  • Identify areas of need and develop appropriate language intervention targets
