This workshop provides information on language differences versus disorders, best practices for assessment of language skills in bilingual children, and alternative assessment methods including dynamic assessment and narrative assessment.
Workshop participants will be able to:
- Recognize warning signals and false alarms of language difficulties in case studies of English language learners
- Integrate the necessary sources of information to make appropriate referrals and diagnoses
- Discuss L1 language loss and implications for assessment
- Identify common signs of language impairment in bilingual children
- Evaluate the appropriateness of formal and informal testing procedures
- Use test modifications to obtain more information for accurate diagnosis
- Identify possible sources of misdiagnosis
- Conduct several alternative forms of assessment
- Use interpreters successfully
